Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Users Could Be Eligible for a Share of a £480 million Compensation in the United Kingdom

Mobile phone users may be eligible for compensation

Nearly thirty million individuals in the Britain who purchased an Apple or Samsung smartphone between 2015 and the year 2024 may be entitled to around 17 pounds per person should a consumer advocacy organization prevails in its case against the American corporation Qualcomm.

Court Case Begins On Monday

The consumer group is escalating the firm to the specialized court in London now.

The trial involving the watchdog and Qualcomm is anticipated to continue for around 35 days.

The organization is accusing the chip company of unfair competition.

The allegation is that the corporation pressured Apple and Samsung Electronics to pay high fees and patent charges for critical phone parts, which then increased the expense of those smartphones for consumers.

The Details the Legal Action Will Examine

The case starting now will focus on whether the chipmaker had control and, if proven, whether it abused a dominant position.

Should the consumer group is victorious, there will be a second stage requesting £480 million from the tech firm, to be distributed among an approximate twenty-nine million British phone owners affected.

The consumer group is pursuing restitution for all impacted Apple Inc. and Samsung handsets bought between the start of October 2015 and early January 2024.

The watchdog says this would probably calculate at approximately £17 each.

Past Cases and Qualcomm's Position

Qualcomm has in the past claimed the case has "no basis".

A parallel claim against the tech giant is ongoing in the Canadian courts, and the corporation has also earlier been penalized by the European Union for anti-competitive practices.

The US regulator in the America took legal action against the corporation for unfair practices in the way it licensed its innovations back in 2017, but had its legal action thrown out in the year 2020.

Importance of the Trial

The head of the watchdog commented: "This legal action is a major milestone. It shows how the power of consumers - represented by our organization - can be used to hold the major firms to be accountable should they exploit their leading role."

The firm is one of the world's biggest suppliers of handset semiconductors and has been subject to allegations about unfair practices previously.

  • Affected handsets include Apple & Samsung models acquired between 2015 and January 2024.
  • The claimed amount being sought is £480m.
  • Per-person compensation is expected to be approximately 17 pounds.
  • The case is taking place at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in the UK capital.
