Escaping Solo Parent Holiday Hell to House-Sitting Heaven: One Parent's Transformation

After my relationship ended, I naively thought holidays as a single parent would be straightforward. I soon discovered they were either extremely costly, or appeared exclusively designed for “conventional” households, or else were far too cheap that I returned back more exhausted than before I started.

Initial Holiday Experiences

My first endeavor, camping alongside companions, was fine up until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Hours of wrestling with it under the sun later, I developed a dislike for camping. Subsequently, the adventure trip for single-parent families. The abseiling and caving were brilliant, but sleeping in a bunkbed wrecked my back. We attempted a budget package in Tenerife, but the hordes of traditional families felt intense, and pool-side conversations with other women died down because I didn’t come with a convenient husband for their spouses to talk to. A trip to Majorca alongside a pal and her kids was brilliant, but the expense was eye-watering.

Discovering Pet-Sitting

Then, last autumn, a friend inquired if we could house-sit her pets in Devon while she attended to a ceremony. During a peaceful couple of days, we strolled along the shore, and curled up by the fire in the evening. That led to house-sitting for her associate in Dorset, and it proceeded smoothly. Encouraged, I subscribed with an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting website, through which, in exchange for looking after individuals' pets, you reside at their residences free of charge. In just a couple of days, I’d arranged a 10-day pet-sit within the county, caring for a retriever named Buzz during the time the proprietors were abroad.

Each day's walks provided the opportunity to discover breathtaking nature spots.

This marked the initial sit for unknown individuals, but any nerves dissipated as soon as we reached at the beautiful spacious home and met the gentle Buzz, who thrived for tummy rubs. Each day's canine strolls offered us the possibility to venture into stunning nature spots, and, after we returned home, we could unwind in the garden for important conversations about our favourite “Ghosts” characters in the television series. There were no pricey overrated attractions to wander around – instead, we browsed bookshops, indulged to manicures, and went on paddling excursions. I experienced lighter and happier than ever for a long time, and could feel my bond with my daughter Polly strengthen every day. I don’t hesitant to say that I wept with happiness. Life seemed possible once more.

Could Pet-Sitting for You?

House-sitting may not be suitable for all. Some people prefer zero duties on holiday other than selecting their upcoming cocktail, aren’t fond of pets, or perhaps feel odd regarding staying in a someone else’s bedroom, clearing their dishwasher, and putting out the trash. However the gentle rhythm of ordinary living, with work stripped out and new places to explore, suits me for me.

It keeps myself from descending into complete idleness, a state that leaves me experience twitchy and strangely hollow. Moreover, financially, pet-sitting is a life-saver for a single parent. A 10-day getaway in a similar-sized house within the identical region we stayed would set me back about ÂŁ2,500 via rental platforms.

A New Perspective

As for staying in a stranger’s home, I discovered it enriching. Even though house-sitting is a transaction, it is equally an act of trust among strangers and creatures, that has brought out my best self – my calm, loving and balanced aspect, overflowing with gratitude for the individuals and places we encounter. I have scheduled another short break off, looking after a whippet in leafy Surrey, and, in the coming year, I hope to attempt house-sitting abroad. Thanks to a touch of innovative planning, we are able to see the world from the comfort of home – it simply turns out to be another person’s.
