Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Victories After Player Arrests
Miami put up 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since guard Terry Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained in connection with a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored 86 opening half scores to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 win against the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further said an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
